Use Hypnosis For Pregnancy and Delivery

Learn more about the power of the mind-body connection! Learning, practicing and using hypnosis techniques will allow you to be more comfortable and calm during childbirth. Hypno-anesthesia does not come from endorphins, it is generated through deep hypnosis suggestions (practice and use!) that re-train the inner mind to interpret physical sensations differently.

Many clients use HypnoBirthing by Marie Mongan. The link includes a free digital download of their signature session, Rainbow Relaxation. This book is available in Audible format too.

Alternatively, to see if hypnosis or guided meditation is right for you, we highly recommend you try a hypnosis session for a Happy Birth from Circle + Bloom before buying more in-depth hypno programs such as Hypnobabies.

The Hypnobabies Hypnosis home study course provides MANY tools for using hypnosis for pregnancy and childbirth. It is a medical-grade or somnambulistic method that teaches you hypno-induction techniques and provides partner scripts and tracks for every birthing stage. We highly recommend that you begin to use this program around 30 weeks gestation and practice daily with your partner. You’ll master deepening cues, hypno-anesthesia, and how to breath your baby down the birth canal rather than the typical purple-pushing (closed-glottis) often done for a hospital delivery.

If you just want the tracks and plan to make it part of your birth/labor toolbox, you can practice daily with these tracks found on Amazon. The reviews are great but since we haven't tried these yet, we'd appreciate your feedback.

Also, here is a short list of birthing affirmations to copy. A fun activity in early labor may be to paint/decorate or write out each affirmation on a card to look at and read while in active labor. Bring tape and use the cards to decorate your hospital labor room and bathroom.

This portion is for students of the Hypnobabies program:

Home Study for Hypnobabies

Considering your course studies, we will review the following points when we meet for our prenatal meeting. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with the topics below.

  1. Opening and Visualization

  2. Transformation / Transition

  3. Pushing (Exhale / Open Glottis)

  4. Cues (Finger Drop, Release, Relax, Peace)

  5. Techniques (hand on forehead or shoulder) and/or use of Scripts/Guided Imagery

  6. Lightswitch Positions (OFF is full hypno, CENTER is used to move/talk, ON is no hypno)

Birth Rehearsal

With your partner, practice 3-5 pressure waves as your Birth Rehearsal. Download a contraction timer app onto your phone, laptop or iPad (whatever device your hypno tracks are installed on and will be with you at the hospital).

Homework / Practice / Upkeep

Listen to the following hypno tracks/cds in order, then repeat the process until your birthing time begins.

  • Special Safe Place

  • Deepening

  • Hypnotic #1

  • Easy Childbirth

  • Deepening (yes, again!)

  • Hypnotic #2

  • Fear Cleansing

What To Practice Before Your Birthing Time

Deepen your hypnosis with Counting Down from 5 to 1. (Great for refocusing.)

Talk about your Special Safe Place with your birth partner ahead of time. Practice together by alternating turns describing your special place and imagining yourself there. Try incorporating all 5 senses. Use photos, memorabilia, etc.

What To Listen To During Your Birthing Time

Hypno-anesthesia and PEACE cue for pushing

Here are two suggestions for breathing (pushing) your baby out. Practice both and see what feels best for you.

  1. Contract your abdominal muscles and diaphragm, exerting pressure in and downward as though you were going to have a bowel movement, saying “AAAHHH.” Always remember to use your PEACE cue, and direct your orange hypno-anesthesia down through your birth canal and throughout your perineum.

  2. Push your abdomen outward, as though you were pushing your seatbelt away from your belly. As you say, “AHHHHH” your bright orange, glowing hypno-anesthesia moves down your birth canal, and you push your imaginary seat belt away from your belly. Your bottom will remain more relaxed.
